A knowledge organiser is one of the most useful tools a teacher can give a pupil. It sets out the exact facts, definitions, and procedures pupils need to remember – all on one page. Used well, it supports retrieval practice, homework, and self-quizzing.
This free knowledge organiser template is designed for UK classrooms. It is intentionally simple, so it can be used in any subject and any key stage.
What a knowledge organiser should include
- Title and topic: Clear, so pupils can find it quickly.
- Key facts: The precise knowledge pupils must remember.
- Definitions: Tier-2 and Tier-3 vocabulary with short explanations.
- Worked examples: One or two model answers that show what success looks like.
- Timelines, diagrams, or mnemonics: Visual organisers where they help memory.
- Self-quizzing prompts: Questions pupils can answer from memory.

How to use knowledge organisers in class
Give pupils the organiser at the start of a unit. Use it for low-stakes retrieval at the beginning of lessons, for homework self-quizzing, and for reference during independent practice. The key is to return to the same material repeatedly – spaced retrieval is what strengthens memory.

Is a knowledge organiser the same as a revision guide?
No. A revision guide is usually longer and covers a whole topic. A knowledge organiser is one page of the essential facts. It is the foundation pupils memorise, not the whole building.
How many facts should fit on one page?
Aim for around 15–25 key facts. Any more and pupils will struggle to memorise them. If you need more, split the topic into two organisers.
Can pupils create their own knowledge organisers?
Yes, but only after they have been taught the material. Pupil-made organisers are useful for revision, but they should be based on accurate teacher-provided content.
